The philosopher Martin Heidegger described the growing homelessness [Heimatlosigkeit] of modern man as "oblivion of Being" and the writer Theodor Fontane stated that "Only by experiencing the foreign can we truly learn what home means to us."
v Today we can experience a swift renaissance of the concept of "home", though it can be hardly grasped objectively. While for some it means a kitschy feeling of pathos, an idealized cliché concept or merely a fiction, for others it is a place of memories, a preserved world, resting in itself. Commuting between the different centres of our life between which our existence is divided has by now become normal. Is this a blessing and a curse at the same time?

In this sense, the title of the exhibition, HOME - [a work in progress], refers to the elusive concept of home, which is related, on the one hand, to normative ideas and conventions, on the other hand, to radical changes and fluctuations.

The five international artists taking part in the exhibition reflect in their work on issues that affect our everyday actions and present various perspectives of lived experience. Where do we get our values from and where do we belong at all? Do we need the roots, is this still possible? How can we preserve traditions in a world rapidly moving towards anonymity? Can we feel at home in several places? If so, then does it become a model for the future? The answers to these questions remain unclear and blurry, because they, similarly to the works presented at the exhibition, are characterized by a process in continuous development.

In the post-communist period, after 1990, mainly the territory of Transylvania was characterized by a huge wave of emigration. In the hope of a better life people sought new ways of integration far from their homes. Some managed to give new expression to their expectations and desires and found happiness far away from home, while others, driven by homesickness, returned to their homeland. In this sense, the exhibition entitled HOME - [a work in progress] is realized at a place marked by alienation, emigration, reintegration, minority issues and diverse cultures and languages, acquiring thus additional meanings in the context of the exhibition.
